Has this ever happened to you that when a family member goes grocery shopping and gets all that he or she wants in abundance that you run out of ideas what to do with it . Well , it happens to me more often than not. K loves his Band Gobi and Phool Gobi so much that a couple of days ago , my man turns up from the shopping with 2 cabbages and 3 cauliflowers. Whew! trust a man to do your grocery shopping just the way you want! . I was bored after I made this and this and then some more . So I call my pedatha and ask her what to do , she opens her treasure chest and lets out another nugget for me to share with you all. I could make it and not worry about wasting the vegetable or throwing it. I have eaten it before at her place and always wondered how she could turn such a pungent vegetable into such a delicious pickle.

When I ate it the first time, it sent my senses tingling. The taste buds on my tongue burst with happiness and joy ! I remember playing an important part of the making process, “the official taster” and that too with huge dollops of home made butter ( venna/makkhan). I have very fond memories of it. Amma always used it as treat to lure me to eat my beans and veggies. There were days when I would throw a tantrum and not eat even though I was hungry, just to eat it.

I’m glad to be back after more than a month. I have missed all those wonderful recipes from my dear fellow bloggers and I will soon patrol all the blogs and leave my trail. I had to keep away from the computer, firstly because of a 3 week rest period and then a relapse again. I couldnt be away any longer and so , here I’m wondering what to make next in my kitchen. The most I missed was the fresh meals I normally cooked everyday. I never said No, when my dear friends offered food , I took it all
.Here I am with a recipe for the event ” Think Spice” hosted by ” The Mistress of Spices” , sunita of Sunita’s world.

What would you think if I offer you a bowl of chillies? That’s exactly the expression K had when I gave him lunch the other day. He took the first bite with a lot of apprehension and a look that said, “Ab tumhare hawaale watan saathiyon”. However, the next moment his look said it all, even chiliies can be deceiving
This is amma’s special dish , a treat for us when we would get tired of eating peas, beans, greens and other healthy food all the week and could no longer take it. A tangy pickle tantalizing the tongue… Tastes better the next day!

A warm sunny afternoon….sounds of light banter coming from the courtyard…..the aroma of strong spices being roasted separately…followed by the sweet smell of all roasted spices being ground together……every soul would be attracted to the vortex of such a utopian kitchen. This was the setting I grew up in and learnt different kinds of spice blends. The one I’m recounting here is a speciality my Eldest cousin, Kalyani makes for dual use - as a curry spice, as well as when mixed with salt and jaggery and served with a dollop of ghee ,makes for a yummy chutney podi.
